The Cambodian Plague was a major biological disaster that formed part of the back story to Imperium Offtopicum VII. First observed in a rural village outside of Phnom Penh in the summer of 2012, the army was slow to react and failed to quarantine the outbreak, leading to a rapid spread through Cambodia and eventually the World. It causes blood to flow from the eyes and limbs to separate from the body and try to move. Even though most people thought it was a virus, scientists determined it was a new form of life, a mix of a bacteria and a virus. By 2069, the plague had died out; at its height, it is estimated to have killed at least 3 billion people.

Cause and symptomsEdit

The "virus" is most probably caused by cannibalism following the famines, particularly in overpopulated "third-world" countries. The virus developed in the brains of the dead when boiled in chemical waste water which was mixed with the local river water. Bubons develop on the neck and behind the ears, initially leading to the belief it was an outbreak of bubonic plague. In 24 hours the victim starts bleeding out of one's eyes and urinates a purple greasy liquid. The liquid contains the virus spores and spreads when people urinate in rivers and other drinking water.

CureEdit

Two Korean scientists, Seung Kyung Rhee and Myung Iseul Yi, were given the task to find a cure. Together, the pair was able to develop a vaccine capable of combating the virus. While the vaccine did not eradicate the virus, its severely cut its lethality, from 87% of cases down to 43% of cases. Kwan immediately poured billions into the development, manufacturing, and distribution of the vaccine. As a result, millions of Korean lives were saved. Even without the vaccine, the virus eventually died out.
