Goebbels as portrayed by Ulrich Matthes
|Title||Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda|
|Aliases||Wilhuff Tarkin, The GoebbelMan|
Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels was a German politician and Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945. He earned a PhD from Heidelberg University in 1921 for a thesis on 19th Century romantic drama, then became a journalist, bank clerk, and stock exchange caller. He joined the Nazi Party in 1924, and became Gautleiter of Berlin; he honed his skill in propaganda as he sought to draw support away from the Social Democratic and Communist parties. Goebbels was fiercely opposed to capitalism, viewing it as a Jewish apparatus, and emphasized the need to build both a proletarian and national character for Germany. This led him to initially call for Adolf Hitler's expulsion from the Party over the latter's antagonism of the socialists, who Goebbels viewed as allies against the greater capitalist threat.
One of Hitler's closest and most devout followers, Goebbels was known for his zealous orations and deep and virulent antisemitism, which lead him to support the extermination of the Jews and to be one of the mentors of the Final Solution. Following the Nazi rise to power in 1933, he was appointed Propaganda Minister and immediately began a whole-scale media campaign to prepare the Germans for war; he regularly denounced the Jews, provoking the 1938 Kristallnacht pogroms.
Goebbels continued to consolidate power within the Nazi Party during World War II. In response to the flagging war effort by 1943, he only increased propaganda with a call to total war, culminating in the formation of the Volkssturm in 1944. He remained with Hitler in Berlin, succeeding him as Reich Chancellor following Hitler's suicide in 1945. Goebbels along with his wife Magda killed their six children before committing mutual suicide. Their bodies were then burned, but due to lack of petrol the cremation failed and their corpses remained recognizable.
Goebbels' character in the Downfall Parody Universe varies, but generally proves to be less zealously devoted to Hitler than in real life, making snide comments and even conspiring behind the Führer's back; indeed, in the serial Hitler's Llama Priest Goebbels is presented as a loose cannon, murdering unsuspecting tomb raiders in pursuit of an anti-aging elixir. Goebbels is the in character "player" of Guangdong in Multipolarity II. His forum handle is Dr. Joe Goebbels.
