The New Hetmanate is a militaristic nation in Imperium Offtopicum IV and its sequel, The Aftermath, played by Thorvald of Lym. Drawing inspiration from the Cossack hetmanates of Ukraine, it is in practical terms an army-run state with a socialist bend and strong emphasis on family ties. The Hetmanate remained fairly secluded throughout most of IOT4, probably due to Thorvald's commitments as GM, but became more active toward the end of the game, founding the Nuclear Liability Legacy Programme and participating in the war on the Democratic Christian Republic of Brazil after Kyiv was nuked. By and large it remained diplomatically neutral, with the notable exception of a mutual alliance with the Federation of Petrograd. Despite, or perhaps because of, its limited political involvement, it emerged from the nuclear war relatively stable, and by the beginning of The Aftermath has been elevated to alleged superpower status.

After the world war, the Hetmanate's NLLP stations were expanded into military bases, allowing it to project force onto every continent. In the years between war's end and the global reconnect in Aftermath, the Hetmanate and Petrograd adopted the Non-Proliferation Doctrine, a policy wherein both nations would use force to prevent other nations from developing nuclear weapons, and would immediately declare war on any atomic aggressor. This threat, combined with a general breakdown in global communications, enforced a general peace for two decades. Under the leadership of Yosyp Defakchenko, foreign policy continued to eschew intervention that would lead to conflict, with Petrograd assuming the brunt of direct policework. The Hetmanate's hand was finally forced after the Marian Republic launched a nuclear missile at Petrograd's Eurasian territories, invoking both the defensive pact and the Non-Proliferation Doctrine. This occurred shortly after Yosyp retired from government, succeeded by his son Yakiv, an experienced army general who believed in a much more participatory role for the country in global politics. A rapidly-tabled appeal to the United Nations established the Marian Joint Strike Force to neutralize Marian nuclear capability and arrest President Sombra de Mar. Before the coalition could be put to use, however, the Marian government collapsed and the nation imploded.

Attitude towards the KaetifEdit

The Hetmanate's effort to integrate the Kaetif into human society has proven one of the most successful, stemming in equal parts from Defakchenko's own initiative, and a general sense of duty amongst the citizenry at large, who consider the creatures "victims of the folly of the pre-war power blocs as much as the rest of the world". The Hetmanate distinguished itself as the first nation to openly allow Kaetif into the armed forces, going so far as to establish the specialized 1st Kaetif Regiment, regarded as one of the best units within the army. The government's outreach to the Kaetif may have been borne of a strategy to bolster solidarity in the Hetmanate's European regions, having been devastated by the fallout of the previous world war.
