Out of character refers to player correspondence that is not part of in-game roleplay. Typically, players prefix such statements with OOC. OOC is generally used to distinguish discussion of game mechanics and/or general conversation from the roleplayed universe, although this system has frequently broken down when players have twisted OOC to justify aggressive play (seen most infamously in the rampant chat screencapping during Multipolarity, and to a lesser extent, its sequel). Some game moderators have responded by attempting to force decorum by punishing extended OOC chatter, with abysmal results.
